Fullerenes
« on: July 16, 2011, 08:15:26 AM »
Fullerenes are the third allotropic form of carbon molecule that is different than graphite or diamond.  It was discovered in 1996.   They consist of a spherical, ellipsoid, or cylindrical arrangement of tens of carbon atoms  (C60, C70, ...).

From left to right: Diamond, graphite, and spherical fullerene.

Cylindrical fullerene (carbon nanotube)

IBM Chip assembled on nanotube (in the SEM* picture, we can see the circuit on the human hair.  The circuit is less than a fifth of the width of it).
